“Savbhagya” Home Gardening Programme – Implementation of Urban Agriculture Promotion Programme
USDA has been promoting the small scale urban gardening programme in selected USDA settlements in Colombo, Anuradhapura, Gampaha and Galle since October 2019 with the objective of encouraging urban low income communities to grow fresh and safe vegetables by providing prior essential knowledge through a workshop.
In complying with the government given priority to promote the food production campaign – “Savbhagya” Home Gardening Programme, USDA has taken the initiation to further encourage people from urban low income settlements to grow fresh and safe vegetables focusing mainly on condominium settlements.
The first programme was executed in “Sahaspura” housing scheme in Borella which consists of 676 housing units in 13 floors. As the preliminary stage, a door to door advocacy campaign about the programme was conducted on 2nd June 2020. More than 200 families participated at this event. During the week of June 08th to 12th, a mini workshop was conducted in every floor while fulfilling the health regulatory measures directed by the health authorities on COVID 19 pandemic. The mini workshops on sharing of knowhow on maintaining a small scale urban garden was conducted in every floor with the technical support from the Western Province Department of Agriculture. Through these mini workshops, 100 beneficiaries were selected with the interest to start their own small scale urban garden. These identified beneficiaries will be given varieties of small vegetable plants at the inaugural session scheduled to be launched in the first week of July 2020 with the collaboration of the Western Province Department of Agriculture.
